SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC SITUATION, 7 MONTHS OF 2012

Also as of this period, the country had 2,358,300 ha of summer-autumn rice cultivated, equaling 103.5% from last year’ same period, of which the Mekong delta reached 1,915,000 ha, equaling 100.8%. Together with this, provinces in the delta also reaped 600,000 ha of early summer-autumn rice, representing 31% of sown area and equaling 84.1% from the same period last year.

As of mid-July, provinces over the country cultivated 834,700 ha of maize, equaling 92.9%; 105,700 ha of sweet potato, equaling 86.5%; 77,300 ha of soybean, equaling 54.2%; 182,300 ha of peanut, equaling 90.8%; 680,900 ha of vegetables, equaling 103% from the same period last year.

As estimated, the herd of buffalos and oxen reduced 5-7% from the same period in 2011; pig rose 1-1.3%, poultry by 5-6%. Prices for poultry meat went down, especially prices for poultry eggs decreased rapidly by 38-40%, creating moderation in households’ breeding.

Forestry


Generally, in 7 months the country’s concentrated newly planted area was at an estimation of 87,900 ha, rose 4.4% from the same period last year; dispersed planted trees reached 125.1 million, rose 0.8%; wood production 2,628,800 m3, rose 11.9%; firewood production 16.9 million Ste, rose 2.7%. 

Damaged area was 2,290 ha of which burnt area were 1,666 ha; destroyed area was 624 ha.

Fishery

Generally, 7 months ‘estimated fishing production reached 3,180,500 tons, rose 5.3% from last year’ same period, of which farmed products reached 1,731,000 tons, rose 6.4%; caught products: 1,449,500 tons, rose 4% (sea catching reached 1,356,200 tons, rose 4.6%).

Industry

Generally in 7 months, the Industrial Production Index (IPI) for the whole sector rose 4.8% from last year’ same period. Of which, IPI for mining and quarrying rose 3.2%, contributed 0.7 point percent to the general pace, manufacturing by 4.3% contributing 3.1 points percent; power and gas by 13.7%, contributing 0.9 point percent; the water supply and waste treatment and management by 9.8%, contributing 0.1 point percent.

Consumption index for the manufacturing in 6 beginning months of the year rose 5.9% from last year’ same period. Stock index as of 01/7/2012 for the whole manufacturing sector rose 21% from last year’ same period, the pace continued to decrease against previous months.

Investment

July’s realized investment capital from the state budget was at an estimation of 19.585 trillion dongs, of which 4,645 billion dongs was from central fund and 14,940 billion dongs from local fund. Generally, seven months’ realized investment capital from the state budget 105,800,000 billion dongs, equaling 51% of the yearly plan and rising 5.4% from the same period in 2011. Of which, capital under central management was 26.3 trillion dongs, equaling 51.8% of the yearly plan and rising 4.8%; capital under local management was 79.5 trillion dongs, 50.7% and by 5.6% respectively.

Attracted FDI from beginning of the year to 20/7/2012 reached 8,030 million USD, equaling 66.9% from last year’ same period. Of which, the registered capital of 584 newly licensed projects was 5,199.3 million USD, equaling 83.7% of licensed projects and 55.9% of the registered capital against the same period in 2011; additional registered capital of 231 times of projects licensed from previous years was 2,830.5 million USD. The realized FDI in 7 months of this year was at an estimation of 6.3 billion USD, declined 0.8% from last year’ same period.

Government revenues and expenditures

Total Government revenues from beginning of the year to 15/7/2012 were at an estimation of 363 trillion dongs, equaling 49% of the yearly estimate, of which domestic revenues were 234.1 trillion dongs, equaling 47.3%; revenues from crude oil 62 trillion dongs, equaling 71.3%; revenues from export-import balances 64 trillion dongs, equaling 41.6%. Of the domestic revenues, receiving from state owned enterprises was 79.4 trillion dongs, equaling 51.1% of the yearly estimate; from FDI enterprises (excluding crude oil) 42 trillion dongs, equaling 43%; from non-state industrial, commercial and service taxes 48.4 trillion dongs, equaling 43.6%; from individual high income taxes 27 trillion dongs, equaling 58.3%; environment protection taxes 6.7 trillion dongs, equaling 50.9%; from other fees 4.2 trillion dongs, equaling 46.7% respectively.

Total Government expenditures from beginning of the year to 15/7/2012 were at an estimation of 454.4 trillion dongs, equaling 50.3% of the yearly estimate, of which spending for investment and development was 89.9 trillion dongs, equaling 49.9% (spending for capital construction only was 86.6 trillion dongs, equaling 49.8%); for economic and social development, national defense and security (including spending for salary rise) 308.2 trillion dongs, equaling 51.3%; for paying debts and aids 56.3 trillion dongs, equaling 56.3% respectively.

Total retailed sales of consumer goods and services


July’s total retailed sales of consumer goods and services rose 0.1% from June and by 14.1% from last year’ same period. Generally, seven months’ total retailed sales of consumer goods and services were at an estimation of 1,327,500 billion dongs, rose 18.7% from last year’ same period, it would be  6.7% if the factor of price rise were excluded. Of which, the trade business gained 1,027,100 billion dongs, representing 77.4% of the total and increasing by 18.2%; the hotel and restaurant: 155.3 trillion dongs, 11.7% and by 19.3%; the service: 131.4 trillion dongs, 9.9% and by 21.7%; the tourist 13.7 trillion dongs, 1% and by 26.6% respectively.

Exports-Imports

Generally, seven months’ export turnovers reached 62.9 billion USD, rose 19% from last year ‘same period, of which the domestic economic sector reached 23.9 billion USD, decreased by 1.7%; the FDI sector (including crude oil) reached 39 billion USD, rose 36.6%.

Generally, seven months’ import turnovers reached 63 billion USD, rose 7.3% from last year ‘same period, of which the domestic economic sector reached 30 billion USD, reduced 7.3%; the FDI sector achieved 32.9 billion USD, rose 25.3%.

Seven months ‘deficit was 58 million USD, equaling 0.09% of total export turnovers.

Consumer price indexes (CPI)

July’s CPI continued to decrease by 0.29% against June. Among groups of goods and services  with falling CPI, transport had the rapidest rate of 2.71%; catering and related services by 0.47% (grain food by 1.49%; foodstuff  by 0.45%; outdoor eating and drinking by 0.51%); housing and construction material  by 0.93%; communication by 0.08%. Those with rising CPIs were: medicines and health care with highest rate of 3.36%; garments, hats and footgear  by 0.46%; family appliances by 0.4%; drinks and tobacco by 0.33%; culture, entertainment and tourist by 0.22%; education by 0.11%.

CPI in July 2012 rose 2.22% from December 2011 and by 5.35% from the same period in 2011. Average CPI in 7 months of this year rose 11.20% against that in the same period in 2011.

July’s gold index reduced 0.31% from June; by 7.8% from December 2011 and rose 7.84% from the same period in 2011. July’s USD index reduced 0.05% from June; by 0.85% from December 2011 and rose 1.31% from the same period in 2011.

Carriage of passengers and cargos

Seven months’ passenger carriage was at an estimation of 1,942.5 million arrivals, rose 12.3% and 80 billion passengers-kilometers rose 10.2% from the same period in 2011. Of which central transport gained 26.8 million participants, raised 9.5% and 17.1 billion passengers-kilometers by 7.9%; local transport reached 1,915.7 million participants, rose 13.2% and 62.9 billion passengers-kilometers by 11.1%. Seven months’ passenger carriage by land reached to an estimation of 1,799.5 million participants, rose 13.3% and 61.6 billion passengers-kilometers by 11.4%; river transport: 123.9 million participants, reduced 0.2% and 2.6 billion passengers-kilometers by 0.4%; air transport: 8,1 million participants, rose 1.8% and 12.8 billion passengers-kilometers by 8.9%; rail transport: 7.4 million participants, rose 2.4% and 2.7 billion passengers-kilometers by 0.9%; sea transport: 3.5 million participants, rose 1.8% and 199.7 million passengers-kilometers by 2.3%.

Seven months’ cargo carriage was at an estimation of 505 million tons, rose 9.5% and 107.8 billion tons-kilometers, reduced 8.3% from last year’ same period, of which the domestic transport gained 483 million tons, rose 11.6% and 39.6 billion tons-kilometers by 1.2%; overseas transport reached 22 million tons, fell by 11.9% and 68.1 billion tons-kilometers by 12.7%. Land transport gained 396.8 million tons, rose 12% and 21.2 billion tons-kilometers by 8.9%; river transport: 78.2 million tons, rose 5.4% and 8 billion tons-kilometers by 5.8%; sea transport: 25.9 million tons, fell by 13.8% and 76 billion tons-kilometers by 14.7%; rail transport: 4 million tons, fell by 5.3% and 2.3 billion tons-kilometers by 4.8%.

Postal and communicational services

Seven months’ new telephone subscribers were at an estimation of 6,453,500 rose 14.3% from the same period in 2011, including 15,200 desk telephone subscribers, equaling 41.6% and 6,438,400 mobile phone subscribers, rising 14.8%. The country’s telephone subscribers as end of July 2012 were at an estimation of 136.6 million, rose 2.1% from last year’ same period, including 15.2 million desk telephone subscribers, falling 1.9% and 121.4 million mobile phone subscribers, rising 2.6%.

The country’s internet subscribers as of end of July 2012 were at an estimation of 4.4 million, rose 26.6% from the same period last year. Seven months’ total postal and communicational service net income was at an estimation of 88.5 trillion dongs rose 6.8% from the same period in 2011.

International visitors to Viet Nam

International visitors to Viet Nam in 7 months of this year were at an estimation of  3,832,400 arrivals, rose 10.8% from last year’ same period. Of which, visitors coming for tourist purposes were 2,277,200 arrivals, rose 9%; for business purposes 663,900 arrivals by 14.8%; for visiting relatives 676,700 arrivals by 14.7%.

Social issues


Farmers’ food shortage

The country in July had 15,100 households suffered from food shortage, reduced 48.8% from June, which were in proportion to 66,400 hunger persons, falling 49%. In comparison with the same period in 2011, hunger families decreased by 28.4%. To overcome the problem, all administrative levels since the beginning of the year have supported hunger households 21,600 tons of food and 24.4 billion dongs, in July only about 760 tons of foods were provided to difficult families.

Epidemic diseases and food poisoning

Generally, the country in 7 months of the year had 65,400 cases of foot, hand and mouth disease (35 died); 29,900 cases of hemorrhagic fever (20 died); 248 cases of typhoid; 352 cases of viral encephalitis (5 died) and 53 cases of meningococcal disease(2 died).

More 1,300 cases infected with HIV were found in the month, bringing total HIV-infected persons over the country as of mid-July 2012 to 257,700, of which 105,300 turned to AIDS and 53,500 died of AIDS.

Generally, there were 74 cases of food poisoning in 7 months, infecting 2,400 persons, of which 16 died.

Traffic accidents

Generally, the country in 7 months had 6,119 cases of traffic accidents, killing 5,374 persons and injuring 4,414 others. As compared to the same period last year, cases of traffic accident decreased by 22.1%; the death by 17.6 and the injured by 27.6%. On average, each day in 7 months of this year, the country had 29 cases of traffic accidents, killing 25 persons and injuring 21 others.
